Vikings season 5 episode 12 preview: Has Ivar met his match?
As we move into this episode, we do have a good sense of what some of the stakes are — Ivar is going to be desperate to hunt down Lagertha at all costs and make her pay for killing his mother – the fact that it didn’t exactly work out for him in this past episode won’t stop him from finding a way to get his revenge. Despite Rollo handing him over her location (in exchange for a rather enormous bounty), Ivar still wasn’t able to find her (she had already set sail to England with Heahmund) and with that, he does have to adjust his plans for the future. While he may be king, that hardly means that his rule will go untested. There are many more challenges that are coming his way, including some that he may not have faced before.
Below, CarterMatt has the Vikings season 5 episode 12 synopsis with some more information as to what lies ahead:
Bjorn, Lagertha, and Ubbe face an uncertain fate as Heahmund’s loyalty is tested. In Iceland, Floki fights to understand the will of the gods. In Kattegat, Ivar may have met his match.
When it comes to Heahmund, all signs point towards this being a rather significant push-and-pull that will be at the heart of his story for a rather-long time. What we know about this character is that he is someone routinely conflicted by the feelings that he has for others, coupled of course with the sense of duty that he has to his faith. He cares about Lagertha, but can he ever really be dedicated to her when his faith pulls him in a different direction? Is it possible that there could be something coming that severs the two in an enormous way? This struggle will continue for him going forward.
In general, Vikings is going to continue to do what they have for some time — work to expand the size and scale of this world and give you a greater sense of notable events in the process. There are many battles coming up and with that, you have to be prepared for the possibility of death. This is pretty much ingrained within the fabric of the series to date — we know that this is a show based on real events, but Michael Hirst still does find a way to surprise! Nothing may top what transpired with Ragnar, but there are other events that have the potential to come close.
