Last Week Tonight with John Oliver talks midterm elections, Megyn Kelly

Last Week Tonight

On November 4, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver kicked things off with the lead-up to the midterm elections. Didn’t that make sense? We are gearing up to an extremely important time in the history of US politics, and with that, there was a LOT to discuss.

Take, for example, some bizarre Congressional races across the country — including a confrontation involving Steve King in Iowa. Things were weird there, but they were just as bizarre in Nebraska over Jeff Fortenberry having a picture of himself with googly eyes on the internet. Basically, it lead to a confrontation between a campaign manager and a professor who liked the picture on Facebook. We feel like Oliver clearly could have done another thirty minutes just on these races and precisely what’s going on with them. Given that we are in one of the ugliest elections in quite some time, there are so many different battles going on and it’s hard to follow them. A lot of it is just moral posturing to try and make everyone think that they are the nicer, better person.

The best moment of the entire opening was seeing Oliver make a diss on Megyn Kelly before someone came out in a peacock costume and celebrated him knowing that blackface is wrong … he then also skewered one other former Today Show star removed from their post. (Let’s just say this went in a weird, almost X-rated direction.) We don’t think Oliver is going to move away from talking about this anytime soon; he is fair, though, given that he also mocked his own parent company at times in the opening.

Next week, we’re going to need to count on Oliver to break everything down in a larger scale when it comes to the elections. Here’s to hoping that proves to be a rather excellent, funny segment in its own right.
