Single Parents, The Cool Kids get full-season orders at ABC, Fox
When it comes to Single Parents, much of the promotion may have to do with the positive reviews around it. The Taran Killam series is, at least at the moment, drawing reasonably good ratings for ABC. It’s drawing on average a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which for a comedy series in 2018 isn’t too bad. The problem is that the industry is at this point so over-saturated that it’s almost impossible to have a smash hit comedy anymore.
With all of this said, we are giving a lot of credit to The Cool Kids for doing incredibly well in a difficult timeslot on Friday nights. The series, which stars Martin Mull and is coming from executive producer Charlie Day, has brought in on average a 1.2 rating. Earlier this month, we told you that Manifest, New Amsterdam, and The Cool Kids would be among the first three shows picked up for more episodes — lo and behold, that has turned out to be true. (The order for Manifest is for 16 episodes total, but that’s a creative decision more than the show necessarily getting a shorter order because of the ratings.)
Out of these two series, we probably have the larger long-term confidence in The Cool Kids just because it’s got Last Man Standing as a lead-in and it’s drawing more consistent numbers at the moment than Modern Family, a series that is pretty clearly near the end of its run. The Cool Kids is also bringing on board a subject matter that you’re not really getting anywhere else on TV, which does make it stand out a little bit more in a series of familiar shows.
