The Flash season 5 episode 2 review: What does Nora know about Cicada?
The episode tonight had a lot of interesting psychological stuff to it, starting with Nora never really knowing her father and deciding, as a result of this, her thinking that she needed to prove how awesome she was to all of the team. Really, though, restraint was as important as anything. Characters sometimes need to be able to just take a deep breath and take a step back.
Meanwhile, for Cecile she had to realize that even if her powers go away (which they are starting to), she can still find a way to cater to her baby’s needs. She can still have a bond, but it’s a different bond and she has to prepare for that.
As for Caitlin and Cisco, the two of them each had to come to terms with the fact that their were different and they could either embrace that or hide away from it. With Cisco, he amusingly got some help from Ralph to get over Gypsy … while getting a small makeover in the process. (We seriously thought someone was going to cut his hair for a minute.) Meanwhile, Caitlin had an opportunity to pursue what happened to her father and while being resistant to it for most of the episode, she decided to eventually investigate the fact that his death certificate from so many years before was a mistake. Cisco was able to get a vibe off of Caitlin in the closing minutes, and that allowed us to learn that her mother was somehow involved in what happened.
Answers on Cicada
We got a glimpse of the Big Bad at the end of the episode and interestingly, it was Iris who started to put the pieces together on what happened to Gridlock in the premiere. She did this while Barry and Nora tried their best to take out a meta here in Vanessa, who had the ability to basically manipulate matter and trap either herself or others into cubes that she could manipulate. It was actually Nora who was able to save her father in the heat of the moment, stopping Vanessa and freeing Barry from his temporary prison.
Cicada actually surfaced near the end of the episode, as he confronted Vanessa and seemingly sapped away some of her meta life force. This is apparently a big part of his power; he renders meta-humans useless with his lightning bolts and were it not for Nora showing back up after taking Vanessa to a hospital, he would probably be dead.
The big twist here seems to be that somehow, Nora has a connection to the character. Or, she at least knows who he is.
CarterMatt Verdict
The face-off with Cicada (who sounds a lot like Darth Vader) at the conclusion of the episode was shockingly terrifying. He was one of the most formidable opponents we’ve seen mostly because he rendered them useless.
