Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage explains Tyrion’s role in Jon, Daenerys scene

Game of Thrones season 7 episode 2 ratings

There are many different mysteries that Game of Thrones season 8 is going to need to tie up, but the status of Jon and Daenerys’ relationship is one of them. The two characters slept together at the end of season 7, but there is a rather big plot twist wedged into the center of it: The fact that the two characters are related, even if neither one of them is altogether familiar of this themselves.

While this is the big mystery going on at present, there are also still many small mysteries brimming underneath the surface here … and that includes why in the world Tyrion opted to lurk outside of the room that Jon and Daenerys were together in at the end of last season. What was he trying to gain out of that, and was it all jealousy? This is a strange, complicated situation, and it’s something that Peter Dinklage himself describes to Entertainment Weekly:

It’s complicated. A lot of the time with Tyrion, it’s professional and personal. Obviously, he has feelings for Daenerys. He loves her — or thinks he does. She’s awe-inspiring. He’s questioning that because he doesn’t have a good track record for falling in love. There’s jealousy wrapped up in there. And he loves Jon Snow, too. They’re the two people he has the most in common with, in a way — they’re both outsiders in their own families who have refused to follow the path their family has taken, and hopefully for the better. He’s wondering how smart of a move [Jon and Dany getting romantically involved is], because passion and politics don’t mix well. He knows the two of them getting together could be very dangerous.

Dinklage’s way of looking at this situation is as such: He thinks that it’s very much likely that Tyrion has feelings for Dany and may feel weird about her being with Jon, but there’s also a larger, political reason for concern. This could be a question as to whether or not she is taking her eyes off of the primary goal, which extends so far beyond the Iron Throne at this point. It’s just as much about survival as it is anything else.
