Supernatural season 14 boss on a world without Dean
While we have to think that Jensen Ackles is going to be playing his signature character again at some point, part of the drama moving into the new season is that he’ll be set as the archangel Michael for at least a stretch of time — longer at least than one episode. This creates many different challenges for the writing staff, and that is something that co-showrunner Andrew Dabb noted in a new interview on this subject via TVLine:
“The show’s built upon two pillars, and those two pillars are Sam and Dean … We’ve taken Sam away for little chunks of time here and there, but never in a huge way. He’s been soulless and things like that, but he’s still kind of present. Demon Dean was kind of a one-episode thing, and largely, the action happened off-screen.”
So how long can this sort of twist really last? It’s an interesting position that the writers have themselves in given that, at least in theory, they could keep this twist going for several episodes if they really wanted to. Yet, for us the real magic of Supernatural comes in the ability to tell a great standalone story that you can watch many episodes down the line. We wouldn’t want to stick to this version of the show for so long that a big part of the DNA gets lost. (Sure, we know that we’ve gotten a lot of Supernatural as it’s been for years, but we are rather set in our ways on this.)
