The Conners spoilers: John Goodman suggests Roseanne will die
Speaking in a new interview with The Sunday Times — his first one since the cancellation of Roseanne happened — John Goodman made it clear that he did not believe his co-star to be a racist. He did not defend the comment that she made on social media, but did note that he did not love how ABC chose to handle the situation: “I’ll put it this way, I was surprised at the response. And that’s probably all I should say about it.”
Meanwhile, Goodman noted that he was depressed for some time after the initial cancellation, largely because he considers that to be a fairly-natural state for him as someone who tends to get depressed easily. He also shared what he thought his character Dan would be like in The Conners when it premieres: “It’s an unknown. I guess he’ll be mopey and sad because his wife’s dead.”
In all honesty, it didn’t feel like there was any way for ABC to go with this given that The Conners does not seem to be trying to change the world of the original show all that much. It is not a particularly easy thing to extract Roseanne from that world and some of the people who are in there if she is still alive. It just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense! Killing the character off is the only way to really deal with a proper resolution of the situation, one where people can move forward and there are fewer questions about whatever the future is going to hold.
Will this potentially upset some Roseanne fans? Sure, but they were probably going to be some fans who were upset about this regardless. We do still anticipate that the ratings for the premiere are going to be big, and then after that, it’s really just going to be about if the story can keep up that momentum.
