Ink Master season 11 episode 1 sneak peek: Meet the new artists
The first episode of Ink Master: Grudge Match is going to be an intense one, mostly because you are going to be reintroduced to Cleen Rock One and Christian Buckingham (the mentors for the new season) to go along with all of the contestants. Following this, we find out a little bit more about the first challenge. The new artists have to tattoo blind, doing one of the two styles that are attributed to the mentors: Black-and-gray or new-school. Of this group, there are four artists who will end up going home. That’s a lot, but it’s a fairly similar format to what we saw on the show last season.
So what do we learn about the new artists in this video? Well, they come from entirely different backgrounds — some of them have been tattooing for decades, whereas some others have only been doing it for a couple of years. Some of them are art fanatics, whereas some other ones are technicians. Some have already been on the franchise via Ink Master: Angels. They all have specific picks as to who they want to work with, but they could be surprised over the course of the season. For example, just because you’re a new-school artist doesn’t necessarily mean that Cleen is the right mentor. Sometimes, it’s good to get a different perspective from someone who doesn’t do that sort of tattoo every day.
What we really like seeing these sort of introductory challenges is the beginning of an artist’s evolution. The sort of tattoos that we see here are often just a sliver of the sort you see by the finale. The best contestants are the ones who come in confident in their abilities, but willing to learn and grow along the way. Sometimes you do get a winner like Josh Payne who was a favorite from the start, but other times you see people evolve and rise to the top over the course of the season.
