Poldark season 5 spotlight: What should the future be for Morwenna?
Of course, we should kick things off here with another reminder that there are some spoilers ahead for season 4. Don’t read on unless you are ready and/or prepared for that. We also recognize that season 5 has technically already been written in the form of the Winston Graham books … but this is just us discussing as though there is room for ambiguity.
What’s so interesting about Morwenna as a character, at least to us, is simply the full scope of her journey. We’re not sure that there has been a character on the series who has been through more over the years. She started off as this innocent governess before before abused, assaulted, and mistreated by Osbourne Whitworth, who completely broke her. Yet, there is a quiet perseverance to this character where she managed to survive the abuse and she’s now here on the other side. She now has a chance to have the happy ending she once thought was impossible with Drake Carne.
Yet, at the same time, this relationship is not going to be what it was back when the two characters first met. She’s been through so much that she can’t view the world the same way. The biggest thing to hope for in season 5 is that Drake helps her to move forward following some of their trauma and the two are able to find some peace for her. More than anything, Morwenna deserves a good life and she’s with someone who loves her unconditionally and expects nothing from her. This is the foundation that could make a romantic pairing work.
Of course, we want to see something more to Morwenna moving forward than just romantic development. It would be great to see a larger legacy for her and Drake, whether it be through Drake’s faith or finding a way to help others. Morwenna certainly does have a chance to be a supporter and a champion of the abused and forgotten in both Cornwall and beyond. This is an era where many do not have a voice and she could be a revolutionary in that field — though that in itself comes with some challenges. She just want for her to find some role in a story larger than herself and this could be a way to do it.
