Young & Hungry series finale movie not happening at Freeform
In a new post on Twitter, star Emily Osment confirmed that Freeform would not be giving the series a wrap-up movie, something that was pushed for following the end of the second half of season 5. This is super-sad news, especially for a show that took forever to come back on the air in the first place.
Yet, at the same time, this news can’t really be a surprise to anyone out there. While Shadowhunters is the most obvious example of a series that was ended by the network far too soon, there are many examples of this dating back to the ABC Family days — think in terms of The Lying Game, Make It or Break It, Bunheads, Chasing Life, or some more recent shows like Stitchers or Famous in Love.
Canceling shows is just what they do. While every network out there does end shows prematurely, it probably stings more with Freeform given that they have shows that have such passionate followings … and it seems like at least another network with a young audience in The CW does a better job of catering to its fans and giving its shows proper endings. (Technically, Shadowhunters is getting at least a wrap-up, but given how much is left in the source material it doesn’t feel like anywhere near enough.)
The one story-related note to include here is that Gabi and Josh were, of course, going to get married. The fifth season ended with a cliffhanger about their relationship, and while we don’t think that it’s a shock that they would eventually have a wedding, it would be nice to get some sort of verification on that. We just hope that for most fans out there, the journey of following this show for the past several year ends up being worth it.
