Last Week Tonight with John Oliver talks trade, tariffs, and more

Last Week Tonight

The main segment on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver for August 19 is trade, a subject many people have heard about in the past thanks to headlines in the media.

Yet, the importance of this segment was breaking things down in a way that made sense … while also mocking in the process Dwight Howard and Dane Cook with various asides.

The reality of what’s going on in the country right now is rather grave: A “trade war” of sorts between a number of different parties and the United States, often over tariffs going back and forth. There are many people hurt in the process of all of this, and sometimes, it unfortunately just so happens to be Americans just as much as it is people overseas. We are talking here about farmers in particular, who can suffer a great deal with prices fluctuating … even those who do support the administration.

This segment was mostly effectively in the sense of giving you various examples as to why these tariffs were hurtful, whether it be to car companies in America or even foreign car companies with production plans in America. Of course, this also included quotes from various people in the administration as to why it may not be somehow anywhere near as bad as it seems. Yet, it is bad. Really, Oliver’s most-damning comment on the subject of trade came from him simply noting the vast lack of economist support on much of the trade back-and-forth, which really says more than almost anything else on what is going on. The real effects are not going to be felt for some time.

While this was not the flashiest of main segments on the series, we were happy to get this before Oliver goes off on hiatus. After all, it’s an important subject that likely is going to remain relevant for most of the hiatus and beyond.
