Making It episode 4 preview: Time for a costume contest!

NBC is hyping up Making It episode 4 as having one of its biggest challenges yet, and we can certainly say that from the vantage point of entertainment, all signs do suggest that this is an hour that is going to deliver.

So what’s the idea here? While we don’t get a lot of the finer details in the promo below, we do at least get the sense that the master makers are going to be tasked with trying to figure out how to create the best possible costume to show off to some of the judges — plus Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman. What’s interesting about this challenge is that it seems to be at the cross-section of crafting meets Project Runway, mostly in that you’ve got to figure out how to dress yourself up in a way that is both surprising, compelling, funny, and also reasonably fashionable. It’s got to be clear what your costume vision is and we imagine that it has to be at least functional enough that you can move.

While we can get a brief glimpse of what looks to be a pizza and a slice of (possible) cheesecake in the promo, there’s so much going on here than that so it almost feels like an injustice to pin them down using those sort of simple terms.

What is also fairly fun at the moment about Making It based on where we are right now is that there is a reasonable amount of parity in the competition and nobody has been extremely head and shoulders above the rest. Right when you start to think that someone has a good shot of winning the competition, something happens that derails them and levels the playing field. We even saw this on this past episode in the final challenge.
