The Affair renewed for season 5, will be final season
Let’s start here with the good news: The Showtime series is coming back for a fifth season! Unfortunately, this season is also going to be the last one. This comes after we think the show hit a creative renaissance this summer after a polarizing season 3 but, judging from a statement from Showtime Networks’ President of Programming Gary Levine, it was always the plan for the show to last for precisely this period of time:
“We love the intimacy, the nuance and the emotional honesty of The Affair’s subjective examination of both infidelity and fidelity … Sarah Treem has always envisioned this as a five-season series, and we will be fascinated to see where she takes her talented cast and all of us next year in its climactic season.”
In some ways, we do understand the desire to leave the series on a high note so that there’s never a feeling as though it is just going through the motions … though we do also think that The Affair probably could’ve run for many more seasons and been just fine. One of its biggest strengths has always been that it is a fairly-versatile show in that it can feature different stories for different characters at any time, and they don’t always have to be about infidelity. As a matter of fact, we don’t think most of the episodes this season have been themed around that, though there is certainly some of that with Ben at the moment and we just saw something rather similar for Vik.
