Sara Gilbert talks The Conners pickup; ABC teases Roseanne’s exit
Today on The Talk, series star and executive producer Sara Gilbert (who is, in part, responsible for the original Roseanne revival happening in the first place) made it clear that she is “so excited” to be coming back to do more of the show in its new form. This pickup comes in the aftermath of Roseanne itself being canceled after a racist Twitter post from its star Roseanne Barr. Barr is not returning and will not have any financial or creative input in the upcoming series, which could premiere later this fall.
ABC has released an official logline describing the series, which hints slightly at how the show is planning to write out Roseanne’s character:
After a sudden turn of events, the Conners are forced to face the daily struggles of life in Lanford in a way they never have before. This iconic family — Dan, Jackie, Darlene, Becky and D.J. — grapples with parenthood, dating, an unexpected pregnancy, financial pressures, aging and in-laws in working-class America. Through it all, the fights, the coupon cutting, the hand-me-downs, the breakdowns — with love, humor and perseverance, the family prevails.
What is this “sudden turn of events” that the remaining members of the family are facing? The only sensible explanation is that the Roseanne Conner character is killed off, mostly because it’s really hard to justify having a show without her if she is still alive. Also, death is the sort of thing that many large families face, and this could be the best way in which the series can move forward. There is, of course, a touch of irony that comes via the fact that at the original end of Roseanne, it was Dan who was killed off. Yet, he’s now alive and it is Roseanne who could be kicking the bucket instead.
