Criminal Minds season 14 character spotlight: Spencer Reid’s future

Today, we’re officially kicking off our Criminal Minds season 14 character spotlight series with someone who is certainly very beloved in Spencer Reid. He’s one of the few remaining people who’s been around since the beginning and he understands the ins and outs of the BAU better than almost anyone.

Yet, is his life really put together in a way that he is satisfied with? Does he have everything that he really wants? Remember that this is a guy who, for starters, has only been removed from being wrongfully convicted for a little more than a year. Beyond that, his life is currently in jeopardy entering the start of the new season this fall.

We should make it abundantly clear here that our three suggestions for Spencer below are assuming that the character survives the cliffhanger — which all signs suggest he will for the time being.

1. Give us more insight on his teaching – We know that in some ways, Spencer’s teaching gigs are a way for Criminal Minds to occasionally write out Matthew Gray Gubler, as he does not always appear in every episode a season. Yet, we’d almost want to see a couple more episodes that are set within this world. What if some of Reid’s students need him for a project, or worse, what if an UnSub starts to target one of his classes? It’d be nice to get a greater window into this world, given that this is such a big part of his life now.

2. Explore things with Diana again – It’s been over a year now since we saw Jane Lynch appear on the series and while we know that the material surrounding Reid and his mother is both heavy and heartbreaking, this relationship is a part of what defines Spencer as a person. Even if it’s just for an episode in season 14, it feels like the time is right to revisit this relationship once more. Lynch seemed to be interested in a return following her arc in season 12; hopefully, that still remains the case.

3. What would a Reid romance look like now? – He’s such a loving, giving person and while romance may not be a cornerstone of Criminal Minds, Reid is probably the one character we want to see in love more so than any other. There’s just so much interesting material that could be mined here, especially if the rest guest star is secured.
