A Very English Scandal episode 1: The Jeremy Thorpe story

A Very English Scandal

If you are looking for a new three-part series to watch on BBC One starting this weekend, A Very English Scandal may be precisely up your alley. This is a series based on the real life of Jeremy Thorpe, a man who was at one point the leader of the Liberal party in the UK. He was at the center of a massive scandal that will unravel over the course of this series, and along the way we imagine that there are going to be many different revelations and surprises that unfold. This is a story about secrets, about the law, and about an affair that goes far beyond what anyone thought.

Want to get some more information regarding the first episode? Then take a look at the attached synopsis:

It is 1960s England, homosexuality is illegal and the politician Jeremy Thorpe begins a whirlwind affair with a young stable hand, Norman Scott. But when the relationship turns sour and Jeremy’s career goes from strength to strength, Norman becomes a secret that Jeremy is desperate to hide…

While there are likely many different British viewers out there who are likely familiar with this particular story, we wonder what would happen if it aired in America down the road. We do think there are important themes and discussions that could come from this. What’s also interesting is the televised format for this show, given that it is only three parts. Couldn’t this have just aired in movie form? We do wonder that.

We’ll keep track of what happens over the course of the rest of the season; stay tuned for some other updates as time goes by.
