Speechless renewed for season 3 at ABC
Be prepared to get a little more Speechless on the air during the upcoming 2018-19 season.
Late last night, series star Minnie Driver first announced on Twitter that the comedy series (one of ABC’s best in terms of combining plenty of humor with plenty of heart and perspective), will be returning for a season 3. To go along with that, the upcoming season will run for 22 episodes.
The third season of Speechless brought in a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and while down from the first run of episodes, this is pretty close to what you would expect from a comedy series on network TV these days. What also may matter to ABC is that this is a show coming from 20th Century Fox TV. While outside studio ownership used to be a major issue in renewals (we’ve seen complicated negotiations with ABC and Modern Family over the years because of this) it’s a little bit different here. Disney is looking to acquire Fox in a mega-deal and if that happens, Speechless will shift over to more of an internally-produced series. That means that they will have a much larger incentive to want to keep it around outside of the fact that it’s a really wonderful show.
As for precisely when the third season will premiere, it is a little early to tell on that at the moment. A firm decision is likely going to be coming up at the ABC upfront presentation next week, at least in terms of if we’re looking at a fall premiere. With this being a family comedy we anticipate that there are always going to be so many more stories to tell based on real life and some of the things that could transpire with characters like this.
