American Idol season 17 renewal official; Katy Perry, judges returning
In a new post on Twitter Friday, show host Ryan Seacrest confirmed that the series is going to be coming back for its second season on ABC in 2019; to go along with that, it seems as though both Seacrest and the show’s current panel of judges in Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie are also going to be on board once more.
One of the biggest challenges for ABC in bringing this revival to the air was rather simple: The price tag. Paying the judges and Seacrest proved to be a difficult thing to do, especially in an era where there are lower ratings. Yet, the series matched most of its expectations preseason (especially with DVR numbers factored in) and has produced an enormous timeslot gain for the network this year. Sunday nights after the Oscars have been a trouble spot for ABC for quite some time but with American Idol, they have found a source of stability.
Do we still think that there are too many singing shows on the air? Sure, but at this point the problem isn’t so much this one. We’d argue that the best thing to do would be to scale The Voice down to one season a year, that way you had that for the fall, American Idol for the spring, and then America’s Got Talent for the summer. You even have a show for the winter now in The Four, which was also renewed recently for a second season.
