Good Girls season 2 odds: Does the NBC series have a shot at renewal?
Entering the finale episode airing on Monday night, now definitely seems like the right time to start wondering about a possible Good Girls season 2. This is a show that quietly has built a following and while nothing is guaranteed, it does seem as though there’s a reasonably good shot that we could see more of the series down the road.
For starters, just look at the cast. This is a show with three very likable performers at the front of it in Mae Whitman, Retta, and Christina Hendricks. Also, this particular genre of semi-comedic crime drama is very much popular right now. Good Girls feels in some ways like a cousin to Claws over on TNT in that it crosses genres and does a variety of really bold and at times really fun things. It pushes the envelope about as much as a network show can. There’s a lot of ambition in terms of where the series can go from here, even if it is with just another ten-episode season 2.
As far as the live+same-day ratings go, Good Girls is really showing the sort of thing that you want for any series at this point in its run: A great deal of consistency. The past several have all pulled somewhere between a 0.9 and a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which means that there is a pretty devoted audience here and the show isn’t trending downward too much. While there is always a risk that a lengthy hiatus before season 2 could kill the momentum (especially if Good Girls isn’t paired up with The Voice again), you do have to take some chances here and there. Also, with the first season being just ten episodes it does feel like there is a reasonably good chance that some more viewers will find it and binge-watch everything leading into season 2.
For now, there’s a reason to feel optimistic about the future of Good Girls — we’ll let you know if that changes at some point along the way.
