Siren episode 5 ratings rise; season 2 odds keep growing
Thursday night’s new episode may have posted the same 18-49 demographic rating as the week before in a 0.3; yet, in total viewers, the mermaid drama improved to 692,000. That is the largest live+same-day audience for the series since its two-hour premiere and, when you consider the DVR and streaming for Siren, this only adds to its potential. Siren has shown itself to be quite a revelation for Freeform within its run and there is no reason for the network to want to cancel it. So long as it keeps pushing forward in this positive direction, we imagine that it could be a staple of the lineup for many seasons to come.
What’s the biggest reason for the popularity of Siren? As described further in the video below (be sure to subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube for more), you really just have to look towards the subject matter as a starting-off point. There are many young viewers out there who grew up on The Little Mermaid and other mermaid-related stories; yet, culturally there haven’t been too many TV shows about the subject matter – and certainly not depicted as predators! It’s a hard bit of subject matter to pull off from a costume and effects perspective at the very least, but having such a compelling story that mirrors some important issues that are happening in the world today (the over fishing of the oceans) and you really have a strong show. To date, Siren has figured out a way to pull this off without also completely breaking its budget in the process. It’s also managed to mature up the subject matter in a way that is darker and different than anything else that is out there.
We’ll continue to track the ratings for the next several weeks but, at least for now, all signs are pointing to another swim next season.
