Emmys 2018: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel to compete as Comedy Series
According to a new report from Entertainment Weekly, the series (which has both comedic and dramatic elements) is going to submit itself as a comedy, a move that should put it in a really good position when it comes to taking home some hardware later this year. Both the series itself and also star Rachel Brosnahan are contenders, and the field could be more wide open in the Comedy category than it’s been in a while.
What’s the reason for that? Think the absence of Veep, as the comedy series will not have a new season on the air for the first time in many years. Atlanta is still going to be around, and the same goes for some network competition including the excellent The Good Place as well as the return of Will & Grace. We’d be surprised if Roseanne, despite its commercial success so far, gets a nod.
Over the years, we do think that there has been increased pressure to draw clear lines to designate between comedies and dramas at the Emmys. That is especially true when it comes to series like Orange is the New Black, which was able to score a lot of attention within the comedy category earlier on in its run. On this particular occasion, though, we’re more than fine with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel being designated a comedy. It has the right elements of it — plus, the show is in part about comedy. Why wouldn’t it be there? It’s got a great shot and we’re excited to see what happens. There is already a second season on the way, and with that in mind we’re excited to be getting some more of this story and to see what creator Amy Sherman-Palladino brings to the table.
Of course, later this year we’re going to come back with a little bit more news when it comes to the Emmys, including our picks on a variety of a lot of different categories at the big awards show.
