This Poldark – April Fools’ Day gag is one of the best
Today in a post on Twitter, the show’s official Twitter account unveiled the announcement of a “spin-off” coming up all about George Warleggan. It is rich, dramatic, and could offer up a different portrait of the man beyond what we’ve seen from him on Poldark proper … or at least we would if it was real. This was edited together rather nicely and for maybe a split-second some out there would be somewhat inclined to believe it. Of course, soon after that we all snap back to reality and realize instead that this is a funny little joke.
We actually are surprised that April Fools’ Day is not something that more networks take advantage of, if for no other reason than that this is a chance to get some really fun, positive publicity for some of your programs. Why wouldn’t you want people discussing your show through this sort of lens? Every little thing that you can do to promote your show goes a long way, even if that includes crafting a fake spin-off show featuring a character who we were meant to dislike. It shows us a brilliant sense of humor behind the show and gets us talking.
Ultimately, Poldark season 4 is going to be premiering on the BBC as early as this summer and on PBS in America a little later in the year. Look for more of George then as we see whether or not this character handles Ross’ immersion into the political world altogether well. (We have a feeling that he won’t.)
