Beyond canceled by Freeform; no season 3 coming

Beyond

Unfortunately, there is some sad news to report when it comes to Freeform’s series Beyond — it has become the latest series canceled at the network after a fairly short period of time. (The news was first reported by Deadline.)

In this case, Beyond received the axe for the same reason that many other shows often do: Low ratings. Through much of the second season it struggled to average a 0.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic, and it was down dramatically both in this measure and also total viewers from where it was during season 1. This is one of the things that you often have to look for when determining the future of the show — how it improves or decreases from one season to the next. You want to see an upwards sort of trajectory or at least stabilize. Otherwise, you’re running the risk that the show would only continue to decline moving into season 3.

Unfortunately, we don’t think that this was all that tough of a decision for Freeform to make here ratings-wise — the show’s fate is being decided just one week from the finale, which lets you know that they have been mulling things over for a little while.

If there was only one reason to think that the show did have a chance for a renewal, it really just stemmed from the fact that Freeform is getting set to air more hours of programming than ever before. That was what gave us at least a little bit of hope that it had a chance — alas, that just wasn’t the case. The network is already moving ahead with a number of other properties, including a planned spin-off for Pretty Little Liars in The Perfectionists to go along with a planned The Fosters spin-off that is going to revolve in part around the characters of Callie and Mariana. That spin-off will likely not premiere until at some point in 2019.
