Gotham season 5: Four reasons for Fox to make it happen
Based on the ratings as they are right now, coupled with recent quotes from Fox, signs do point to there being at least one more season of the series. The biggest problem that Gotham may run into is this: Finding the spot on Fox with their limited real estate. With Thursday Night Football taking over the fall on Thursdays there is less room for the series than there once was; they will either have to move Gotham to a new night or wait until midseason to premiere it, which probably means in turn a smaller episode order than the typical 22.
As we look towards the series’ future, we do still think there are a number of clear reasons why the series should be brought back for more — isn’t now the best time to dive into some of those?
1. Beyond the live ratings – Sure, Gotham may perform like it does in live+same-day metrics, but we’ve certainly come to know over time that this is just a small fraction of the series’ overall performance. There are so many other factors that have to be considered here, and the series is doing very well when it comes to DVR figures plus also streaming data.
2. International appeal – Let’s face it — how many better franchises are there worldwide than Batman? It’s hard to really think of many. While Fox may not be the studio behind the show, we do think that they benefit on some level from how the series performs overseas — if nothing else, this is something that they can bring to the negotiating table with Warner Bros. TV.
3. Many more villains – At present, there is a substantial amount of story that Gotham could still tell that they have not to date. Take, for example, someone like a Killer Croc or a proper Joker. Of course, you also still have a chance to really flesh out someone like a Mr. Freeze or a Firefly who have only popped in here and there. We’re only just starting to get to the point where Selina Kyle is starting to resemble Catwoman.
4. Something closer to Batman – At the start of the season David Mazouz told CarterMatt that the end of this season will bring Bruce close in some ways to being the Batman that we all know and love — we don’t expect a super-advanced version of the Dark Knight in season 5, but it is something the series could look at.
