In this article, the focus is on Ryan Ballantine, a fire suppression manager who, ironically, is actually looking to start some fires within the house. He fashions himself the next great villain for the series.
Take a look at the pre-game interview below.
CarterMatt – Tell me about yourself — your name, your age, and where you’re from.
Ryan Ballantine – I’m Ryan, I’m 39 years old from Calgary.
What do you do for a living?
I’m a fire suppression manager for a safety company.
What made you want to be on Big Brother Canada this season?
I’ve watched the show since BB US 1, so I’ve been watching for 20 years. This is a show that really struck my sensibility as something that I needed to do — being locked in a house full of people and being able to manipulate everybody into doing whatever you want. It’s kind of right up my alley.
What’s your strategy for winning this season?
I want to use a strategy that really hasn’t been done successfully in a really long time. I’m hoping to have a ride-or-die but have them be on the other side of the house and then meet in the middle at the end. I’m keep them safe from my side of the alliance and they’ll keep me safe from their side of the alliance until we can join forces around the final five, final six.
Who are you most like from past Big Brother seasons, US or Canada?
From the US seasons, the person I’m going to base my game on is Dr. Will. The evil genius style of play and knowing that it is a game and it doesn’t impact the outside world. Just leave the moral ambiguity about doing certain types of things at the door because it’s about being successful.
What’s the one part of your life at home you’re going to miss the most in the game?
I have a wife and son so I’m going to miss my family. I’m probably, knocking on whatever wood I can find here, going to miss [my son’s] whole lacrosse season this year. It’s not that long in Calgary. I think he starts up over the next week with evaluations and if all goes according to plan, I won’t be home until that season ends. And, I coached his team the last three years. So I’m going to be a little bit disconnected from that and it’s something that he and I had a serious chat about before I left. I still expect him to play at a high level even though I won’t be there.
Who is your biggest idol in life and why?
I’m almost 40 so I don’t really live with the idea of having an idol to live my life by. I really respect my parents. I’m not divorced, but they got divorced when I was younger and they seemed to handle it, at least to me, better than most other parents did. They really kept all of the tension and strife away from my brother and I. I look up to what they were able to accomplish in their lives and I hope to live up to that expectation.
How are you going to keep live feed viewers at home entertained?
I feel like I’m going to be a guy who is not on the actual episodes at all. I’m going to be very popular on After Dark and the live feeds. My mouth sometimes runs away with me. Some people often get close to their own personal line, and that’s when they stop telling jokes or sharing stories. I not only drag them past their line but I run past everybody’s line until a point when I’m laughing hysterically but everyone else is slightly off-put by how far I’ve taken the joke. I just don’t think there’s no natural end to when a joke is funny if you can keep digging a little deeper.
Besides the money, what are you hoping to get out of this season?
I’m hoping that other people come after me and say ‘I really hope I can play the game that well.’ I think I want to be remembered as one of the greatest players of all time. I want to be in the mix for all-star seasons or in the international mix. I think if I was off from my job for three months every year winning Big Brother in some other country, that would be phenomenal.
First Impressions
This guy is really reaching for the stars with the whole goal of wanting to play internationally. The idea he has for playing like will isn’t bad, but we don’t think he’s going to be able to fit in well enough with his age and his history being a coach. He’s not going to be able to turn that off.
