The CW adding Sundays: What this means for The 100, Supergirl, Jane the Virgin, more
In a statement on Wednesday, network programming head Mark Pedowitz had the following to say about this exciting shift in their programming:
“By expanding to six nights, The CW is now able to give our fans even more of the series they’re so passionate about … Broadcasting remains the foundation of our multi-platform approach to bringing our programming to viewers. Over the past seven years, The CW has added more than 80 hours of original scripted programming to its schedule – now that number can continue to climb, as we grow our broadcast lineup, and continue to add content on every platform.”
One of the biggest struggles that The CW has had for a little while now is trying to fit all of their programming across ten hours — that’s one of the reasons that we have shows like Supergirl, The Originals, and The 100 airing until June rather than concluding in the May sweeps. Adding these two hours could mean that all of their shows could end in May, or it may just give them a chance to add a few more series.
We do think that this news is great for shows like The 100, Jane the Virgin, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend that certainly have bubble-show distinction. We do think it could also be a good landing spot for a show like Supergirl, which has been forced to air against other comic-book shows for the majority of its run.
The last time The CW broadcast original programming on Sundays it was more than a decade ago, but the network’s in a much better spot than it used to be. They’ve figured out great ways to monetize their programming in the internet age and, beyond that, they’ve also figured out a good way to orchestrate streaming deals for their shows.
