Big Brother: Celebrity Edition spotlight: Will Mark McGarth fly away with the competition?

Mark McGrath

Sugar Ray singer Mark McGrath is one of the contestants taking part in Big Brother: Celebrity Editionand there is one thing that makes him immediately different from any other iteration that we’ve seen of him on other reality shows: The air. Why is Mark suddenly bleached-blonde? Is this all of a sudden 2002?

Beyond his unusual hair choice, McGrath is interesting since you’re basically throwing a singer into a house where singing is, for the most part, not allowed. That’s just cruel!

For those viewers out there who are younger and don’t remember Sugar Ray when they were at their heyday, the band really broke out in the late 1990’s with songs like “Fly” (hence the cheesy pun in the title) and “Every Morning.” They had a string of about three or four super-successful songs and were a really popular touring band for a long time. Things really started to fade about thirteen or fourteen years ago, and since that time there’s been less in the way of original music and many of the band’s former members are no longer there. McGrath still does record some of his own material, and we figure that a part of the reasoning for him being on the show is to get himself a higher profile again.

Here’s the problem: Through every reality TV appearance we’ve seen from Mark, we’ve yet to see any evidence that he has the sort of competitive drive needed to win. For a rock star he’s surprisingly even-keeled and doesn’t do a whole lot to ruffle any feathers. The irony here is that in Big Brother, sometimes the winners are the people who don’t do a whole lot and just find a way to get to the end because someone else is a much bigger target. This could be very well what ends up happening here.

What we’re interested to see – If Mark is able to form alliances or do much of anything to convince someone that he is a threat in the game. We do think he’ll be safe for the first few weeks. If the men become threats, then we certainly think that Metta World Peace and Chuck Liddell are going to be targeted long before he is.
