Gotham season 4 spoilers: Is Jerome really the Joker?
While we’ve seen Fox subtly tease over the years that Jerome could be the Joker, at the same time they’ve never come out and confirmed it. Originally back in the second season, it was suggested that instead of him being the character, he served as his inspiration prior to his initial death. We had wondered for some if the producers had abandoned that thinking in the years that followed, mostly because they resurrected Jerome and gave him even more stories that were similar to the character who becomes the Joker in the comics.
Yet, we now seem to have our verification … and it may surprise people. Jerome is not the Joker, and all of this will make soon. It was none other than Bruce Wayne himself (David Mazouz) who confirmed this, stating the following in a new interview with Discussing Film:
“He’s not the Joker, that’s all I’m saying. He’s definitely the inspiration for the Joker and the way that the Joker comes into the show is one of the most brilliant things Gotham has ever done.”
This is something that the actor behind the Jerome character in Cameron Monaghan confirmed on Twitter, though he later delated it:
“I can confirm. What we’ve cooked up and discussed is something not to be missed. It’s a twist on familiar themes, both new and old echoes of the mythos. Something entirely new, but we believe true to the spirit of the show as well as the comics. Proud I got to be a part of it.”

The reason that we do think that this makes sense for both Jerome and for Gotham is that this ends up following the tradition of the comics even more so than what the show has done to date. Remember, the origin story of the Joker himself was always somewhat of a mystery. By having Jerome and the Joker be two different characters, the writers have a chance to preserve this while giving you backstory for the man behind the Joker, which we like to think is almost as important in its own way.
Consider that our two cents on the subject.
