Ink Master interview: Garrett Bisbee on elimination, working with Steve Tefft

Garrett Bisbee

Garrett Bisbee felt like an Ink Master contestant who could go a long way — he performed well in the very first challenge of the season before eventually ending up with Steve Tefft as his mentor.

So why did he go home Tuesday? It seemed like his nerves ultimately got the best of him tattooing in that environment, and that’s something that he confirmed in the first of what will be many weekly exit interviews here at CarterMatt throughout the season. Look below to see what Garrett had to say on everything from working with Steve to what he enjoyed about being a part of the show the most.

CarterMatt – Upon reflection, how do you feel about your elimination? Do you think the judges made the wrong choice?

Garrett Bisbee – Yes. I think I had a lot more skill that I was not able to show in just the two tattoos that i did on the show. A lot of the artists in the competition were one-trick ponies and I think I could have gotten a lot farther then most of them.

When you first got Steve as your mentor, how did you feel about it?

Fine! living with Steve was really cool. He’s really easy to talk too and we really clicked. We both are in Metal bands and I think that made us vibe well.

How much did Steve telling you about your linework rattle you during the challenge, and do you blame that at all for your elimination?

A lot. The only reason I over-worked the lines was because I was so nervous. I think my linework was better before I went back and nitpicked them.

Were you surprised at just how intense and full of pressure the competition was?

Yes. I’ve never been in high stress environments like that. Being home-schooled, I was never really prepared for being in crowds of people, let alone crowds of competitive, high energy people. I found myself closing up a lot.

You mentioned when you left that you didn’t get to do a lot of what you wanted. What were some of the styles you wanted to showcase?

I really love tattooing in black and grey and realism. i didn’t get to show any of that.

What was your best memory from taking part in the show this year?

Just hanging out with so many tattooers. It’s great meeting people when you automatically have so much in common.

Do you ever want to come back and do this again? sure!

I think if I got my emotions and nerves in check I could do so much better and be a top competitor.
