MacGyver season 2 spoilers: Original Murdoc Michael Des Barres to guest star

Michael Des Barres

How about this for a tale of two Murdocs when it comes to MacGyver? It looks as though both David Dastmachian (who plays the new version of the character) and the original actor in Michael Des Barres are going to be appearing in the same episode.

According to a report from TVInsider, Des Barres will be turning up as Nicholas, a dangerous man who just so happens to be a mentor for the new Murdoc. Yet, some mentor/mentee relationships can be short-lived within the assassin space. When Nicholas decides that he is ready to hang it up and call it a career, his young protegee decides that the time is right, in turn, to kill him.

Isn’t this going to be a fun way to incorporate two versions of the same character? We like to think so, and we certainly applaud the producers for making something like this happen. It’s a way to both honor the original show while also bringing something exciting to the next chapter. It’s not as though Michael Des Barres is playing the same Murdoc that he used to — it’s a slightly different version of him. After all, these two shows are not explicitly set in the same universe; with that, these castings are playful nods more so than anything else. MacGyver is the sort of show where you can do this and it doesn’t take you out of the show.

Michael Des Barres is the second major actor from the original MacGyver to return in some capacity; previously, Bruce McGill (the original Jack Dalton) stopped by for a different role. We know that there are many fans out there interested in seeing Richard Dean Anderson appear in the future, and it does feel like that is going to happen. For the time being, though, it’s mostly about finding the right role for the actor. We’re not sure he will end up playing Mac’s father despite some fans clamoring for it to be so.
