Supergirl season 3 hiatus doesn’t mean the show is in danger, per CW
Is this hiatus a sign that a Supergirl cancellation is imminent? Typically, shows airing outside of the traditional fall season is not a good sign, but in this case it seems to be completely unrelated to the show’s performance. The series should be safe.
Speaking to TVLine, CW programming Mark Pedowitz confirmed that there are production-related reasons behind the hiatus, though they remain unrelated to co-showrunner Andrew Kreisberg being fired earlier in the year. Supergirl’s future still seems to be secure, and Pedowitz is looking at the change instead as an opportunity to try some new things:
“[With the hiatus in mind], we thought, ‘This is a good place put put Legends,’ knowing that iZombie would go behind it at the end of February … [With Supergirl airing beyond May, it] also allowed us to extend into the summer, to give us more original programming, which is actually a good thing for us … The fans of Supergirl should not be worried in any way, shape or form. We are big believers in the show, and big believers in [series lead] Melissa [Benoist] and the direction of the show.”
Supergirl fans shouldn’t be worried, given that season 3 is turning out to be creatively one of the strongest. While there are some missteps here and there (we don’t love the breakup storyline with Maggie and Alex, though we suppose they needed to write out Floriana Lima somehow), it’s hard to argue about whether or not Reign is the best villain that the show’s ever had. She is amazing, and it’s really not close. They’ve also done a better job stabilizing the show’s tone — there is a lot of humor in here, but at the same time also romance, drama, and inspirational moments. This is a show that ultimately makes people feel good, and we don’t see The CW dumping it anytime soon. We’re fairly confident, barring some huge surprise, that a Supergirl season 4 renewal will happen.
