Could The Big Bang Theory end after season 12? It’s possible

The Big Bang Theory season 11

Over the past decade-plus The Big Bang Theory has become one of the most-popular sitcoms in recent memory. It’s generated huge ratings, international success, and is probably set to be remembered years from now in the way that many great sitcoms from the seventies and eighties are today. Yet, like those sitcoms, eventually there does come a time when you have to consider dropping the curtain.

Could The Big Bang Theory end after season 12? As per star Johnny Galecki, it’s a definite — and almost likely — possibility.

Speaking on this subject to reporters at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour, Johnny Galecki (who was there to promote Living Biblically, the upcoming comedy that he is executive-producing) made it clear to TVLine that there have been talks about the series coming to a close:

“The only manner in which the cast has discussed wrapping [The Big Bang Theory] has been that we’re all going to be very sad when that day comes … But I think at this point everyone’s very comfortable with 12 seasons being a good time to go home and see our families.”

While the series could creatively last forever, we are nearing a time in which many of these characters have everything that they could ever ask for. Leonard and Penny are married, Howard and Bernadette are parents, and Sheldon and Amy are well on their way to having a wedding. There’s plenty of time for Raj to find the right person, and there’s also enough time for the writers to give these characters success in their careers. Our sentiment is that there’s been a certain degree of reluctance to do that just because it’s easier to have everyone still on a relatively-level financial playing field. Also, having a set of someone’s mansion seems fairly challenging.

Contractually, the cast of The Big Bang Theory will be up at the end of season 12, and they’ll have so many repeats in the can at that point that many of them can earn syndication money for some time to come. This show has offered up a wonderful level of comfort so that many of them can pick and choose whatever they’d like to do in the future. (For the record, Galecki said that he would love to return to Roseanne for more episodes if the ABC revival returns.)
