Why hasn’t Grey’s Anatomy crossed over with Scandal?
When you think about it, on paper it actually makes more sense for there to be a Grey’s Anatomy crossover than it does for either one of these shows. After all, Grey’s Anatomy is the one show that is the most procedural, and therefore a crossover wouldn’t interrupt any of the other long-form stories that it has going on. Not only that, but Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal also have had more direct involvement from Shonda Rhimes; while she is involved in How to Get Away with Murder, Pete Nowalk is the showrunner there and has been since the beginning.
Sometimes, though, what makes the most sense on paper doesn’t always make the most sense in practice. Logistically pairing up Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal wouldn’t be all that hard, but you also have to think in terms of the story. Grey’s Anatomy is set in Seattle, whereas Scandal is all the way out in Washington DC. What reason would there be to pair up these characters together? It’s too hard to sell creatively, whereas at least you can argue that How to Get Away with Murder and Scandal have proximity on their side. Maybe a Grey’s Anatomy character goes to DC and bumps into Abby at Starbucks; that’s really the most that they can really hope for.
Also, Grey’s Anatomy has its own extended universe so it’s not short on crossovers. Having Caterina Scorsone on the series full-time basically gives you a Private Practice crossover every week, even if that show isn’t on the air anymore. Meanwhile, the firefighter spin-off is premiering a little bit later this year, so we are hopeful for some more crossover action from that.
