5 new shows to watch in 2018: Absentia, Counterpart, The Terror, more
With 2017 starting to wind down, what are we looking forward to in TV in 2018? This article will be focusing on 5 new shows CarterMatt feels are worth checking out! Some of these have realistic themes, some of them dabble in science fiction and the supernatural, but all of them look fantastic in their own way. It’s a reminder that despite however much great content is on the air now, there is always going to be more around the bend.
Check out CarterMatt’s five favorite picks below, coupled with some ways to get some additional information about all of them.
Absentia (Amazon) – A ten-episode thriller that’s already aired in many other territories, with positive reviews coming in both for the story itself alongside Stana Katic’s performance as Emily Byrne. She is a woman struggling to return to her life after spending several years presumably in the captivity of an infamous criminal. Yet, as the story progresses this complicated web becomes all the more difficult, lines are blurred, and the lives of everyone close to her are never the same.
Altered Carbon (Netflix) – One of the most ambitious science fiction series in recent history, Altered Carbon asks the question as to what happens when consciousness and body become separate and you can change yourself as you see fit far more than ever before. Joel Kinnaman of The Killing leads a great cast, and we hope that this will become your next binge-watching sensation.
The Assassination of Gianna Versace: American Crime Story (FX) – The second iteration of Ryan Murphy’s anthology series is based largely on the event in the title. It’s a tale of tragedy, but also a tale of glamour, excess, and instability. There’s an exceptional cast in here much like there was with the first American Crime Story season, with Darren Criss, Edgar Ramirez, and Penelope Cruz leading the way.
Counterpart (Starz) – JK Simmons is playing two characters in a drama series all about parallel universes. What more do you really need to know? Simmons is a tremendous actor (if you haven’t seen her performance in Oz you really should – it’s terrifying!) and this show looks to raise questions about how one decision can unravel your life in ways you never thought possible.
The Terror (AMC) – This upcoming series features a stellar cast, including Ciaran Hinds of Rome and Tobias Menzies of Outlander, and incorporates one part historical drama and another part horror. We’re heading up to the far north, where the crew of a ship gets so much more than they ever bargained for.
