The Flash season 5: Should the next Big Bad be teased this season?
At the moment, there’s a pretty good reason to consider this possible: The ability to move forward into the future. While with some other shows you don’t have the ability of foresight, The Flash renders that possible in a wide array of different ways. There’s always that risk of screwing with the timeline, but it hasn’t stopped Barry before. Also, you already have at aleast one character from the future in Abra Kadabra who we’ve already seen venture back to the past and offer Barry a warning; who’s to say that he couldn’t do something like this again?
If there is one particular reason for Barry to receive a warning from a fan perspective, it’s this: It gives you something to look forward to that’s a little bit more specific than just “another Big Bad whose story will probably stretch out the remainder of the season. One of the reasons why this was probably done with DeVoe especially was because of some of the rampant criticism that was out there about all of the Big Bads on this show being speedsters in some shape or form. Having a non-speedster as a villain was something to build excitement for in advance as a means of convincing people that there was something more to look forward to, someone different with powers that could test the team in different ways.
If The Flash doesn’t feel the need to differentiate its upcoming villain from The Thinker, they may decide that there’s really no point at all in introducing the season 5 Big Bad so early. Another reason to hold off on it is actually a little bit simpler: They may just not know for sure just yet. You want to make certain that you have the right man or woman for the job as opposed to someone who will flame out after three or four years. One of the other problems is that many of the most iconic villains for The Flash have been used in some shape or form already. Reverse-Flash and Zoom are dead, Savitar is seemingly gone, and who knows what will become of DeVoe by the end of the year? We could see either Inertia or Godspeed being interesting, but as we’ve noted, there have already been a lot of speedsters.
(Fun/crazy thought — given that Godspeed in the comics was Barry’s former partner, what if Patty Spivot somehow became evil and got powers? Just saying.)
Basically, to go with a non-speedster villain you probably need to elevate a villain who wasn’t as enormous in the comics, especially since the show already made Mirror MAster a little less of the great character he is in the soruce material. He’s one of the few Flash villains we’ve been disappointed in when it comes to his appearance on the show.
