Could Elizabeth McCord run for President on Madam Secretary?
We do absolutely think that it could happen on the show and it’d be fun to explore; however, there really isn’t that immediate a need to tell this story. Remember that it wasn’t all that long ago that Madam Secretary had an election storyline and you don’t want to make the entirety of this show about determining who is living in the White House.
In speaking on the Presidential drop-in line to Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Barbara Hall had the following to say about some of what is planned:
“I think by season’s end we will get a good idea of her level of interest and whether it’s something that’s she going to pursue. It’s a long journey anyway, so we want to see what that holds for her. Some stories you will see in the future will be about her relationship with Teresa Hurst (Jan Maxwell), who is the Vice President. We’ll explore whether Teresa sees Elizabeth as a threat. That will indicate how far along Elizabeth is in that journey.”
CarterMatt should state that by no means does Elizabeth need to pursue a higher office in order for Madam Secretary to be a worthy story. There is something that is rather nice about a show that shines a light on one singular area of government, one that often is not explored as much on TV. Yet, why not look at it in season 5 or, if we’re really lucky, a season 6? At that point we’ll have a pretty definite picture of life through the Secretary of State’s lens. At that point the show can shift to being more about Elizabeth’s future and offering up more hope as a country.
Maybe Madam Secretary wasn’t always a show meant to uplift, but we see the tonal shift happening somewhat in this fourth season. Maybe with there being so much darkness happening in the real world right now this series can become more of a beacon of love.
