Outlander season 4 filming update: How far along is production?
It’s true that nothing on set has transpired since the filming update we presented yesterday — it’s rather hard for more to happen given that December 14 was the final day of filming for the Starz drama until the new year. Yet, we do now have confirmation via Sophie Skelton (Brianna) on Twitter that the second block of season 4 is officially complete! It hadn’t been 100% confirmed before this that the Outlander hiatus corresponded perfectly with the end of block #2.
There are effectively two different things to take away from Skelton’s post.
1. Outlander is now four episodes into season 4 – It’s been said previously that each block of season 4 consists of 2 episodes — save for the finale, which is its own separate beast. Basically, Outlander has made it through the first four episodes of the new season in a little over two months after having started this all off at the start of October. That’s a pretty brisk pace for this show!
Yet, don’t assume that filming for the rest of the season will continue at the same pace. Season 4 filming will take place outside of Scotland at some point — it haven’t been announced where or if the main cast will be involved, but the move could take a little bit of additional time. Filming can also fluctuate depending on the type of scene that is being done, whether it be an action sequence or a small, dialogue-based scene featuring just a couple of characters.
2. Brianna will appear at some point within the first four episodes – While anyone who knows the Diana Gabaldon book Drums of Autumn shouldn’t be shocked by this, it’s still nice to have confirmation on it. Bree has an enormous story coming up that will transform the character and put her in contact with a wide array of people both new and familiar. We don’t want to say anything more out of fear of ruining things for non-readers; also, there’s no guarantee that her future will follow the books directly, anyway.
Overall, let’s just hope for more Brianna than just the small handful of episodes that we got of her at the start of season 3. We wondered if Outlander would bring the focus back on her in the finale, especially given Geillis Duncan’s plan; however, that didn’t quite happen.
Outlander season 4 filming will continue in the new year, and of course you can expect more updates from us every step of the way! The 13-episode continuation of the story should premiere on Starz in late 2018.
