Golden Globes 2018: Outlander, Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe, Kit Harington among reader picks
Throughout the month of November, CarterMatt readers have been sharing their picks for their favorite potential Golden Globe nominees leading up to the official nomination announcement on Monday, December 11 bright and early in the morning.
Tens of thousands of votes were cast throughout the month, and we want to give a special thanks to everyone who participated! While there were some close results, there were also others that were clear winners. The following names are not Golden Globe winners or even official nominees; they’re just actors and shows that our readers would like to see get a little bit of love at the Golden Globes. Hopefully, this helped with the campaign process.
Drama Series – Outlander. With more than 90% of the vote going to the Starz drama, this was a complete and utter blowout.
Drama Actor – Sam Heughan, Outlander. We can say the same thing here, with Heughan finishing just under 90%. Donnie Wahlberg of Blue Bloods put up a fight in the early going, but that soon faded.
Drama Actress – Caitriona Balfe, Outlander. Another blowout, which just goes to show the strength of Balfe’s incredible performance and the support that Outlander fans have in her and the show overall.
Supporting Actor – Tobias Menzies, Outlander. This encompasses all categories, but Menzies was the winner over Alexander Skarsgard and others with more than 70% of the vote.
Supporting Actress – Sophie Skelton, Outlander. With this, the Outlander clean sweep of our polls was complete. Every single category the show or its cast were involved in, it won.
Limited Series / Movie – The White Princess. There was some competition here, but Starz continues its domination! The period drama starring Jodie Comer was the victor with just over 50% of the vote.
Limited Series / Movie Actor – Kit Harington, Gunpowder. Even though the limited series is not airing on HBO until a little later this year, both the show’s popularity in the UK + Harington’s own popularity from Game of Thrones were enough to get him the win here. With just 36% of the vote, this was one of the closer polls of the year.
Limited Series / Movie Actress – Jessica Lange, FEUD: Bette & Joan. Lange received around 50% of the vote, enough to give her top billing in what is a crowded field.
Comedy Series – Santa Clarita Diet. While a likely longshot for the Globes itself, it did take more than 50% of the vote here.
Comedy Actor – Anthony Atamanuik, The President Show. Atamanuik’s brilliant Trump satire was enough to get him an overwhelming victory in this category.
Comedy Actress – Kristen Bell, The Good Place. There were nothing but good vibes coming Bell’s way in this category — she took home the final category with more than 40% of the vote.
The CarterMatt Awards start soon…
Consider this a reminder that tomorrow marks the beginning of the 2017 CarterMatt Awards. It’s our sixth year doing this at the site, and over the years we have had millions of votes cast across some unique, fun TV categories. We hope you join us and celebrate some of the staff picks!

Hi, why is it you only note that Caitriona Balfe won based on her “incredible performance.” Um…do you not think that applies to Sam Heughan as well? Or are you stuck in the “he’s the beefcake” narrative that has been used by STARZ/Sony since this whole thing began, including one Sony exec praising the performances of Cait and Tobias, while only referencing Sam’s jaw. His acting each season has been phenomenal, and yet he continues to be overlooked. Please, please – be smarter than this and see the incredible work he has done this season in a richly emotional and nuanced performance.

I would definitely have to agree with Laina Saul regarding the noticeable partiality to Cait over Sam. I am a very new watcher to Outlander so I am not aware of the history. But Sam has matured into an excellent actor and should be acknowledged for his work and not only his looks!!!

So true about Sam and his phenomenal acting–it’s the extras he brings to acting-adding remarks he thinks his character would say-and bringing human real ideas into the script. Yes he is a hunk-but his acting prowess is up and over all!!!♡

I absolutely agree about Sam H phenomenal performance and that he deserves more acknowledgement. There would be no show without him.
However I feel it’s unfair to pick on this website, if that was your intention. This is one of the best places on internet to get your fix on all things Outlander. There are dozens of very well thought through analytical articles on here which actually talk/praise Sam’s performance on the show, not the looks only.
Overall I do agree and truly appreciate you bringing up this point. I think Sam is often overlooked and that is very frustrating and unfair. #justiceForSam ??
