This Is Us season 2: Chris Sullivan’s prosthetic suit enters conversation again

When it comes to This Is Us, Chris Sullivan’s prosthetic suit that he uses to play Toby is the conversation topic that just won’t go away. It started up last year when it was revealed that he wears it to come across heavier as Toby, and from that point on the poor guy’s endured backlash for trying to play the character as authentically as possible. His co-star Chrissy Metz has come to his defense in the past, and in a new interview this week Sullivan offered up probably his most poignant thoughts on the subject to date.

Speaking to Megyn Kelly in a new interview today, Sullivan’s stance is simple: He does the best job that he can with the character, and that is really what matters to him the most. Take a look:

 “There is a lot of things to be outraged about these days, and I think that getting outraged about an actor on a television show who may be wearing a costume that makes him larger than he is, might be low on the list … At least in my opinion. If I am not portraying Toby with the level of integrity or honesty — [if] you disagree with [that], I would be happy to talk about that. But I think that regardless of the costumes that I wear, especially with Toby, I try to bring as much heart and honesty as I can.”

Sullivan also looks at some of his other projects through the same lens, which makes sense for him given that he’s worn quite a few big costumes and played a number of interesting characters over the years. For the record, we’ve always thought that what makes him so wonderful as Toby is the enthusiasm and the heart he brings to it. That’s why people were so upset when the character almost died earlier this year.

It’s with all of this in mind that we’re very much concerned here at CarterMatt for what could happen with Toby later this season — we care about the guy! Kate is pregnant and we want to see it all work out okay; however, we also know that this is a high-risk pregnancy and with that, there are no guarantees it will be. Within the world of the Big Three we’ve come to know time and time again that nothing tends to go altogether according to plan. There are always some surprises that, for one reason or another, end up happening. It’s unfortunate that not all of them are surprises of the positive variety.
