Misha Collins returning to Supernatural during season 13 episode 5
First of all, we should note that it really isn’t that much of a surprise to learn that Castiel is going to be coming back to the series. He’s everyone’s favorite angel (or he should be), and from the moment he turned up to Comic-Con with that stool it was clear that he wasn’t going anywhere. The twist is that the Winchesters can’t know that. They have to feel the pain of him leaving for the show to achieve what it’s setting out to do: Routine kicks in the feels. While Sam and Dean have certainly seen many surprise occurrences before of people coming back from the dead, they’ve also lost people for good before. Given what happened to Cas, it makes some sense that they would think it’s curtains for the guy. Holding out hope is a dangerous thing.
Luckily, Supernatural season 13 episode 5, airing on November 9, is going to come around and throw a major shock into their system! This episode is entitled “Advanced Thanatology,” and that’s a pretty intentional name when you think about what thanatology is: A study of death. This may not be strictly about Castiel, but his return had to make the writers lean in to offering up this title.
The synopsis below gives you more of a sense of what is coming within this episode, including the return of another familiar face associated with the show in Billie, who you haven’t seen in a little while:
“While working on a case involving the ghost of a demented doctor, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) get assistance from an unexpected source – Billie (guest star Lisa Berry). Castiel (Misha Collins) finds his way back to the Winchesters. John Showalter directed the episode written by Steve Yockey (#1305). Original airdate 11/9/2017.”
Given that Collins is still a series regular, the anticipation is that you’ll be seeing a good bit of him in the weeks to come to make up for being relatively quiet in the first part of the season. There are going to be MANY questions that he’ll have to answer — provided of course that he even knows the answers to them. For example, how in the world is he back, what happened to him when he was gone, and are there some unexpected consequences that come with him being back from the dead? We’ve seen some different iterations of Castiel before and we have to think it’s possible that this new Castiel could have a few things that are different about him. That’s just speculation on our part, but c’mon — it certainly makes some sense!
