Grey’s Anatomy season 14: Timeless’ Abigail Spencer to play Megan Hunt
According to Deadline, Timeless star Abigail Spencer will appear in multiple episodes of the medical drama in the role of Owen’s previously-thought-dead sister, replacing Bridget Regan (The Last Ship, Jane the Virgin) in a recasting. Regan’s work commitments elsewhere rendered her unable to come back in the role.
Given that this is Grey’s Anatomy, we have a hard time imagining that there will be any sort of winks/nudges to the new actor in the role. It’s just not that kind of show. Megan will appear, and by all estimations, she will be treated as the same Megan who was there previously. She is also the long-lost love of Nathan Riggs, who was dating Meredith at the end of this past season before learning that she could still be alive.
So how will this role work for Spencer, given that she also has another important TV gig? Well, Timeless season 2 will not start filming for some time, so there should be an opportunity for her to do multiple episodes here without there being any conflicts. She’ll need to be gone later this season, but Grey’s Anatomy can cross that bridge when they come to it. ABC and Shonda Rhimes are lucky to be able to find another extremely accomplished performer for this part. Spencer, in addition to being great on the NBC time-travel series, also was tremendous on Rectify and her arc as Scottie on Suits.
Grey’s Anatomy premieres on ABC this fall, and we know that there are many big episodes to come. There’s been some footage shot in Seattle, and there will be at least one returning cast member in Kim Raver, reprising her role as Teddy. Teddy also has her own connection to Megan, and her return to the show could have a thing or two to do with that. Given that this is season 14, there’s no reason to hold anything back — and for Kevin McKidd in particular, Megan being around may provide him with some of the best material that he’s ever had.
The thing that both Owen and Nathan both need to remember in this case is that this is not the same Megan Hunt that they remember. She’s gone through probably some unspeakable hell, and as a result of that, she will probably not act or feel like the same person sometimes. They just have to deal and prepare for that, and if they do, maybe they can still find a way to build some sort of relationship.
