Nashville season 5 finale spoilers: Maddie, Juliette on the brink

On next week’s Nashville season 5 finale, everything is going to come full-circle. In the early seasons of the show, it was Juliette vs. Rayna. The two women battled in some sense for country-music superstardom. The industry fed on it and made it worse, but there also feelings and complications at the heart of that relationship.

Now, you can see the same thing between Maddie and Juliette. The industry and the news cycle aggrandizes everything, but there’s been conflict brewing for quite some time between the two of them that started with what happened even before Juliette took a song meant for her. Everything could spike in this finale, and the consequences could be severe. Yet, the same goes for many other characters at the same time.

Nashville season 5 finale synopsis – “Season 5 ends with Deacon and the artists of Highway 65 taking a stand and Zach sending a message. Meanwhile, Maddie and Juliette’s conflict comes to a head; Daphne attends a pool party; and Gunnar returns from Avery’s tour.”

Within this episode, we do hope that the finale finds a way to set up some big, interesting storylines for some of the other characters. We’d like to see Gunnar and Scarlett kick off something totally new that is separate from the super-depressing plot that they had for much of this season. Meanwhile, with Deacon we’re just happy to see him making his presence felt at the label. While Rayna’s memory is still there, he’s finding his voice and being a major player again in the industry.

Given what we do know about Nashville at this point in the run, we’d be crazy to not think that there will be some sort of big cliffhanger. That’s been the case for almost every other season of the show, and CMT already renewed the series for a season 6. Maybe it won’t be life-or-death, but given that the show’s premiere date is uncertain and a long hiatus is likely coming, it benefits the show very much to create some sort of tease that keeps people excited and engaged for the show … whenever it ends up coming back.

Basically, we see much of this as a reflection of everything that we’ve been explaining to date: Things are going to get pretty darn ugly and nasty between Juliette and Maddie. Meanwhile, the lights are going out at Highway 65, as Zach decides to take control and effectively hold everyone hostage.

There is something in here for Scarlett/Gunnar fans, but it is too early to know one way or another what it means for the pair’s long-term future.
