Doctor Who season 11: BBC One responds to Jodie Whittaker critics

Jodie Whittaker critics

Do you want to see precisely how polite a television network can be? Then look no further than the BBC’s hitting back at Jodie Whittaker critics. Or, we should just say “people who are upset because a character they’ve always loved on Doctor Who is now played by a woman, and they haven’t actually seen her on the show yet so they are going based on preconceived notions and/or prejudice alone.”

Since the news of Whittaker’s hiring, we alas have seen many examples of sexism at its finest. While we’re not saying that every critic of the casting is sexist, we’ve seen many sexist responses. This is without even mentioning some of the utterly brutal/disgusting British tabloids deciding that this is the time to exploit Whittaker’s past credits and post revealing photos of her — man or woman, that’s just gross. It’s almost ironic that the BBC is so polite when they are effectively responding to so much filth.

Take a look at some of what they had to say below:

Since the first Doctor regenerated back in 1966, the concept of the Doctor as a constantly evolving being has been central to the programme. The continual input of fresh ideas and new voices across the cast and the writing and production teams has been key to the longevity of the series.

The Doctor is an alien from the planet Gallifrey and it has been established in the show that Time Lords can switch gender.

As the Controller of BBC Drama has said, Jodie is not just a talented actor but she has a bold and brilliant vision for her Doctor. She aced it in her audition both technically and with the powerful female life force she brings to the role. She is destined to be an utterly iconic Doctor.

We hope viewers will enjoy what we have in store for the continuation of the story.

Basically, the message here is super-simple: Give Jodie a chance, because she’s awesome and she’s worthy of that. Plus, you may end up liking her way more than you do right now. If Doctor Who fans stopped watching something after they first started to levy complaints, the show wouldn’t have any viewership anymore. The real magic of the show is how it’s able to turn people around even when they are uncertain about something in relation to the show. Personally, we do think that there is much more to be said about this subject down the road, and we once again remind you that the thing that really matters more so than anything else is whether or not new showrunner Chris Chibnall has a worthy story to pass along. If not, it doesn’t matter who the Doctor is at all.
