BET Awards 2017: Leslie Jones opens show with knee brace, jokes aplenty
After all, you do have to remember that Jones was a standup long before a Weekend Update correspondent or a sketch performer. This may allow her to flex her muscles that she doesn’t always get to.
Jones started things off by making it clear that she has a great connection to BET — ComicView was the first place that she ever performed on TV. She had a little bit of fun mocking some of the rappers’ names, and also herself given that she is about to turn 50. (The funniest part of this opening was how she threatened to punch someone in the face when she heard that they were only 21.)
The only thing that surprised us about the opening is how Jones managed to do the entire opening without passing out. She expended a lot of energy running up and down the stage. That is even more impressive when you can consider that she was sporting a knee brace for the entirety of the opening.
If you love Leslie, odds are that you found this very high-energy and super-entertaining. This was by and large a great look into what she does best, which is big, absurd, and often hilarious humor that is self-deprecating and based very much off of her own experiences. The biggest thing that is great about it is the same thing that’s great about her story altogether: She had to work hard for so many years before making it big, and that makes it so much easier for her to be grateful for every opportunity that she has. She’s now done major movies and is a main cast member on one of the premiere comedy shows on television. It doesn’t exactly get a whole lot better than this.
