Teen Choice Awards 2017: Should Riverdale, Pretty Little Liars, Famous in Love win Drama TV Show?
As we get into the first category of Choice Drama TV Show, we are happy to say that there is a pretty great track record here at the site over the years. There are a few times where voters have gotten it wrong in comparison to the main show, but by and large, they’ve been fairly on-point.
How to vote – Just select your favorite in the poll below! You can vote however often you’d like, but you may need to refresh the page in the process. Also note that if you are viewing on an AMP page you may need to click to view the non-AMP version at the bottom of the page. We’ll announce some of the winners among CarterMatt readers on July 15.
Remember, voting here is not official. This is just a fun way to gauge the popularity of the nominees, and if they align with what the Teen Choice Awards voters decide.
The nominees: Choice Drama TV Show
Empire (Fox)
Famous in Love (Freeform)
Pretty Little Liars (Freeform)
Riverdale (The CW)
Star (Fox)
This Is Us (NBC)
Sizing up the field
Given that Fox airs the Teen Choice Awards, it makes sense for them to have Empire and Star on the list. With that said, neither one of them have any shot at all of winning. This Is Us is clearly the best show of the field in terms of quality programming that makes you go home and sob uncontrollably after the fact. The problem there is that it’s not so much a teen show. It’s more of a “show that sometimes teens watch with their parents.” It’s better suited for the People’s Choice Awards, the Emmys, or about a hundred other awards shows that it will probably be nominated for.
This does bring us down to just three nominees: Riverdale, Pretty Little Liars, and Famous in Love as contenders.
Who will win
Of this group, you have to think that Pretty Little Liars has got this in the bag unless the series finale is terrible and nobody votes for it out of spite. Beyond that, it’s hard to see any other show amassing the fan base for a long-beloved show and Teen Choice favorite that has won numerous awards in the past, and is rising the high of a final season. (Have you looked at the actress field before? Basically, it’s almost everyone from PLL from start to finish.)
Who should win
It may be controversial, but Riverdale is the show that encapsulated everything that we wanted from a new “teen” show in 2017 — great drama, interesting characters, and a refreshing take on the source material. Also, they were smart to have most of the season 1 story be fairly insular so that when season 2 starts, it can be completely fresh.
If we were in a situation where Pretty Little Liars had never cleaned up at the Teen Choice Awards before, maybe we’d feel different. However, it’s won enough that it feels fine that it should pass off the torch.
