American Idol revival: Ryan Seacrest key cog behind ABC decision

Seacrest

While it appeared as of Friday afternoon as though American Idol to ABC was a done deal, reports then came out about Fox making a last-ditch effort to get the show back that they effectively canceled just one year ago.

However, it now looks like the deal over at ABC to keep the show is more locked-in than ever before now, and there may be one simple reason for that: Ryan Seacrest. According to a new report coming in courtesy of TMZ, one of the key reasons why production companies Fremantle and CORE Media Group like ABC is because of their interest in having Seacrest be the host of the show much like he was for Fox for so many years. Because he is now the host of Live! with Kelly and Ryan, he now has more connections there and the deal could be easier to work out.

The crazy thing here is the overall schedule for the show, given that these companies seem to want to keep the show in Hollywood over New York City. If that happens and the show airs on Sunday nights as planned, it effectively means that Seacrest would have to travel out to Los Angeles for the weekend and then fly back overnight to New York after each live show, often getting very little sleep before the start of the next Live! broadcast. It’s certainly possible, but it also seems like an exhausting feat. We wouldn’t be shocked to see some guest hosts here and there on Mondays; we certainly know that the franchise is not that averse to doing that given that they waited almost a full year to get Kelly Ripa a co-host in the first place.

In the end, we anticipate seeing everything confirmed come a little later this month, which is when ABC will confirm everything during their upfront presentation in New York City. Putting the show on Sundays for them is clearly effective just because of the fact that this is the night they need the most help with — the ratings were pretty miserable there for most of the season!
