American Idol season 16 reboot coming together at ABC; not official

American Idol season 16 reboot

While there are no firm indicators yet that the American Idol season 16 reboot is all-systems-go over at ABC, it does look like it’s close.

According to a new report from Deadline, the alphabet network is in talks with FremantleMedia North America and CORE Media Group in order to bring the show back, but there some key components with this show that need to be worked out moving forward before a deal can be struck. These two production companies have been a source of great tension over the past few months, and that’s one of the biggest reasons why there isn’t anything official at the moment.

Still, ABC is looking like the runaway favorite to land the show right now, and it’s somewhat of a surprise given that a few weeks ago they weren’t even in the conversation. Yet, it’s looking now like they could be angling to bring the show on for the spring of 2018; we don’t know if the plan there is to replace a cycle of Dancing with the Stars, or use it to anchor a different night of the week such as Tuesdays. Who knows? Maybe ABC is looking to make a big swing that includes putting the show on Sundays after the awards cycle is over.

One thing that is interesting about this new report is that there is more of an indication here that Ryan Seacrest could be interested in the reboot, despite a new gig as the co-host for Live! with Kelly and Ryan. The one benefit that comes with the ABC deal is that this is Ryan’s current place of employment; in addition to working with this show, he also hosts Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Even with Ryan Seacrest annually for the channel. Maybe if they can work out the schedule, him coming back to host the show is possible.

Before that, though, it remains to be seen if American Idol and its producers can get the deal done. The biggest issue we see when the show returns is simply the fact that there is still a glut of talent shows out there. Maybe if The Voice is scaled down to just the fall, American Idol could establish itself as more of the hit of the spring.

Once there’s more known about the show’s future, we’ll have more for you here! For now, we suggest that you just head over to the link here to secure some further news regarding the proposed revival. (Photo: ABC.)
