Agents of SHIELD season 4 episode 20 sneak peek: Coulson the believer
In this preview, you see Coulson do everything within his power to assert what is in his mind now a sudden but important realization: They are living in a false reality. Nothing around them is real, and it’s all a construct devised for a great purpose. It is fairly clear that Phil hasn’t quite figured everything out just yet, but he’s getting there. You can start to see some of the mental dots connecting in his mind getting him from point A over to point B.
Unfortunately, what he realizes after dropping this truth-bomb is that Agent May isn’t quite there. We don’t think that there is any perceived unwillingness to get there, but she’s not ready to accept that just yet. Instead, she’s busy trying to help on the ground in the best way she can, and we do find it rather funny that she does much of this while also still wearing a Hydra uniform. Hey, we suppose that you’re not going to turn down any help if someone is offering it, right?
Given that tonight’s episode does carry with it the title of “Farewell, Cruel World!” (intentional exclamation point), we have to think that this is a symbol we are bidding the Framework adieu and heading back to the real world proper. Granted, that’s not the end of the world for the team and their wide array of problems. They still have the challenge of Aida over there, who is eliminating her directives and putting forward her own mission to destroy SHIELD and potentially the world as we know it. Did we worry about the comparisons to her and Ultron earlier this season? Absolutely, but we’re not at that same place now where we’re shaking in our boots over it anymore. The stories are different enough to stand on their own two (robotic) feet.
