The Voice: Johnny Gates, Johnny Hayes latest wildcard contestants
As for how the coaches came to this decision, the only thing that we can say here is that clearly, the finale two coaches in Gwen Stefani and Adam Levine clearly saw something still in the two of them.
Gwen chose to bring back Johnny Gates on tonight’s episode, and if we are being honest, we have to admit that we’re shocked that it even got to the point where he was eliminated in the first place. He’s a fascinating guy and a unique artist, and we do think that he’s got a chance of making it through to the next round.
For his performance, this Johnny opted to go up with a cover of Selena Gomez’s hit “Hands to Myself.” On the surface, it didn’t feel as though there was going to be any way at all that we would enjoy this since it was such an odd choice — especially lyrically. It was such a strange, unusual choice, but even still we ended up really liking every second of it from start to finish. He did something unique, and his entire energy and presence validated the decision to come on stage and rock this in the first place.
As for Johnny Hayes…
Adam announced Johnny as his returning contestant in the second half of the show, and we almost think that maybe Adam knew that he could have an opportunity to bring him back the moment before he sent him home. His song choice tonight in “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” was interesting, but we also do think that he brought a lot of good stuff to the table here in terms of hitting the notes and working the stage. He needed to, given that this was not a particularly flashy song.
