The Leftovers season 3 spin-off: Don’t expect it (or any loose threads)
Will there be a Leftovers season 3 spin-off series in the future? We understand the question and the desire for it, mostly because this show is all sorts of fantastic.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t quite appear as though it’s happening. Speaking to Variety on the red carpet before a recent premiere screening, show executive producer Damon Lindelof passed along the following message to Variety:
“This is it; we left no dangling threads, no to be continued, no spinoff possibilities. We made pretty sure that this was going to be the last season of the show … The audience deserves as satisfying an ending as we can give them. I don’t think anyone wants to see a question mark at the end of this.”
For the record, we do think that we’d have a certain degree of openness to seeing more of the show. However, we do understand and we’re never going to fault the show finding a time and a way to end it that makes some sense for both the story and its characters. You never want to see a good idea run into the ground, and in giving us only three seasons (and a shortened final season, no less), you are effectively guaranteeing that this is not the case here.
For now, we’re simply excited to learn precisely what is going to be coming up as this story starts to reach its peak. In the event that you have not seen it to date, you can see the synopsis for the premiere below — obviously, we understand that there are some out there who would prefer to know nothing about the show and opt to just watch it instead. For those, we suggest just looking away from this altogether:
“Three years after Miracle, Texas was overrun by the Guilty Remnant, Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux) has returned to his role as chief of police. Although he seems to have moved past the incredible events surrounding his ‘resurrection,’ the Seventh Anniversary of the Sudden Departure is just two weeks away and many believe another apocalyptic event may come with it.”
We will be providing some further over of The Leftovers season 3 over the course of the coming weeks / months, so be sure to head over to this link for some further insight on that.
